Clay, concrete or stone pavers: how to choose
Material choice is easier when the intended traffic, look, maintenance and installed build-up are considered together. A product sample tells only part of the story.
Begin with the use and the complete pavement
Is this a garden path, a dining patio, a domestic driveway or a vehicle-loaded yard? State the actual use before comparing products. The supporting ground, base, bedding, jointing and edge details must suit that use. Do not treat a paver thickness or a supplier photograph as a complete specification.
Ask for the exact product name, dimensions, finish, manufacturer data sheet and intended application. Confirm how the chosen unit will meet existing paving, doors, drains and borders.
Compare the visible qualities honestly
Clay pavers offer fired colour and a distinct surface character. Concrete ranges offer a wide selection of shapes and finishes, including interlocking units. Stone and large-format slabs can create a quieter joint pattern but may need different laying, cutting and care. These are broad families; performance belongs to the particular product and installation.
View physical samples both dry and wet in the property’s light. Consider texture underfoot, cleaning, colour variation, joint width, edge detail and whether replacement units will be available later. For wet areas, request the exact finish’s published suitability and slip information.
Put the choice into a comparable written scope
Two quotes using different product families are not like-for-like. Ask each contractor to identify the paver, excavation, base, bedding, restraint, jointing, cutting, drainage and waste handling. Also record who approves a substitution if the selected item is unavailable.
A supplier listing does not establish Peninsula Paving stock or an approved product for your site. Confirm current availability and the installation instructions with the chosen supplier before an order or formal quote.
Keep planning.
General manufacturer guidance supports the planning questions above. Your site and selected product need their own assessment.
