CAPE TOWN PAVING GUIDE

Pool surround paving: a practical selection checklist

Pool paving is experienced with wet feet, bare skin and frequent cleaning. A colour sample alone does not answer whether a surface suits the space.

PLANNING GUIDE

Try the real surface, not only a photograph

Ask for a physical sample of the exact product and finish. Review it dry and wet, in direct sun and shade, and with bare feet if practical. Discuss published slip information and the manufacturer’s suitability advice for wet external areas.

Pale and dark materials can feel different underfoot in sun, while heavily textured finishes may be harder to clean. The best balance depends on the pool, users and maintenance expectations.

PLANNING GUIDE

Detail the edge and the water route

Coping, corners, steps and expansion or movement details deserve a separate drawing or written description. Ask how water will drain away from the pool deck and buildings, and how the new work will meet existing paving and landscaping.

A pool surround may have equipment, pipework and existing waterproofing nearby. Confirm that the proposed work accounts for those features before excavation or removal begins.

PLANNING GUIDE

Make maintenance part of the choice

Ask the product supplier how the finish should be cleaned and whether sealing is recommended. Pool chemicals, leaf stains and repeated wetting can change maintenance needs. Avoid committing to a treatment without checking compatibility with the selected product.

A written scope should identify the product, finish, coping, drainage, cuts and waste removal. Confirm that sample approval and any substitutions happen before installation.
